Patrick McGorry
Patrick Dennistoun McGorry[1] FRCP FASSA FRANZCP AO PhD MD (born 10 September 1952) is an Australian psychiatrist, best known for his development of the early intervention services for youth.
Professor McGorry and his colleagues developed an approach for young people presenting with symptoms of psychosis for the first time, based at the EPPIC clinic in Melbourne.[2] This EPPIC clinic has played a key part in the early psychosis preventative paradigm for psychiatry[3][4][5] and has led to significant reform of mental health services,[6] especially in the United Kingdom.[7] The EPPIC clinic is best represented by the catch phrase A stitch in time [8] and its development of a service for those at risk of developing psychosis.[9]
He is currently the Professor of Youth Mental Health at the University of Melbourne.[10] McGorry has written numerous peer reviewed articles, published in journals including The Lancet, the British Journal of Psychiatry, the American Journal of Psychiatry and the Medical Journal of Australia. He is also executive director of Orygen Youth Health [11] and founding editor of "Early Intervention in Psychiatry" published by the International Early Psychosis Association.
In January 2010 he was named Australian of the Year for his services to youth mental health.[12][13][14]
In June 2010 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia.[15]
